No, I’m not talking about the fake smile you use for your pretty picture on Instagram for likes. I am talking about a genuine smile that you are happy to be there and not for the number of likes you have for Instagram.

A real smile.

There have been researches that show smiling can predict how you’ll do in the future.

Although smiling is known to be a way of verbal communication, it is also a determination of how well you do in your life and in the future. So not only will you appear charming in front of people, but you are brightening your path to a brighter future by showing your teeth.

This is what studies have shown how smiling can predict your life:

1) Long-Lasting Marriage

Of course, we all want to live happily ever after with the person we love, and one of the best ways to find out if your marriage will survive is to see how much your spouse smiles in their entire childhood.

Researchers found in old yearbooks of people who smiles the most, and when they interviewed them, they found that not a single one of them is divorced. The ones who didn’t smile as much as them, their marriage didn’t last very long.

Although it may not be entirely true because some circumstances may happen that could end a marriage no matter how positive one can be, there are 3 good reasons behind this hypothesis.

  1. Real smiles spread happiness and positive vibes around us. It gives automatic reflexes to our brains to be more positive and optimistic, making us unconsciously spread good vibes around us.
  2. And because smiling is contagious, the people who see you smiling can’t help but feel your trust and honesty. A smile is enough to help you gain more friends instead of a long face.
  3. Researchers found that real genuine smiles show that it’s the body language that shows a more trustworthy person. What is most stunning is that they would recommend people who smile the most to loan their money to because they found that on average, these people would make sure to payback.

Milinski, one of the researchers, said that people who give genuine smiles are the ones who are willing to cooperate. And in turn, the people around them are willing to cooperate with them as well. This is how you can also build trust before you prove to them that you are honest.

As you can see, all these points support marriage: emotionally, trustworthiness, and financially. Smiling more encourages them to be more happy and trustworthy to each other, which is what a stable marriage needs.

So the more real the smiles are, the more that the relationship lasts longer.

2) You appear more attractive

If we take a look at celebrities who are very loved by their fans for their smiles, I can’t help but think of people such as Emilia Clarke and Gal Gadot.

By looking in every interview they have been to, they keep smiling so much but you can’t help but feel that happiness in them that vibrates into you too. If you also check the comment sections, you’ll find just how many people keep mentioning their smiles and that made them love the actresses even more.

Today, Emilia Clarke became the first global ambassador of Clinique, a cosmetic retail company, and Gal Gadot won Israel’s beauty pageant in 2004 and appeared in many modeling photoshoots such as Vanity Fair, American Vogue and so many more. To top it all, Emilia Clarke has 27.3 million followers, and Gal Gadot has 45.6 million followers as I write this. That’s quite a lot for someone in the acting and modeling business, though Emilia is an emerging A class actress and model.

What I am trying to say here is that the way you smile reflects the beauty in you. Yes, there are some who do say that smiling will make you look older because of the wrinkles you make when you smile, but if you can stay attractive, why not smile?

Researchers did two different experiments to find the relationship between smiling and attractiveness. They find that these two do have a link.

“The stronger the smile, the more attractive a face looked. “— Jessika Golle, Fred W. Mast & Janek S. Lobmaier, 2014

There are studies that also found that having a resting b*tch face isn’t going to make you glow or even attractive. If we think about it, do we really want to spend the rest of our lives with someone who doesn't smile?

Psychologists at Swansea University found that people with real genuine smiles appear healthier and seems to ‘glow’. And wearing those smiles is as powerful as applying make up.

‘A smile really is the best accessory.’ — Dr Alex Jones, psychologist from Welsh university

So naturally, to appear beautiful for life is to show real happiness through a smile, leading to my last point…

3) Your Health

Because smiling helps you to become more optimistic, the mindset helps to get your physical body to be positive as well.

Your mental health affects your physical health, so having a positive mindset gives your body a lot of health benefits. And the greatest way to have that positive mind for positive health is by smiling.

Studies found that people who smile a lot tend to live a healthier life and long-lasting life than the people who didn’t. It’s because their real smile turns the gears of a positive mindset and that turns the other gear to have a healthier life, mentally and physically.

Conclusion

As you can see, this simple behavior benefits your future a lot. It’s similar to a simple act of kindness, but it determines how you will live in the future. In this case, there are three benefits when you keep smiling:

  1. Long-lasting marriage
  2. Attractiveness
  3. Health

It’s a small gesture to happiness, but it is a life-time. Don’t smile just for the camera, most of them are lies. They are just there for the ‘likes’, the best one is the ones that are not posing for the camera.

So keep smiling, and don’t be afraid to flash those white teeth. Doesn’t matter if it’s crooked to another side, keep that smile on your face.
