Finding For Your Passion is Bullshit

I did this to find what I love to do.

There are times that we are not sure who we are and the easiest way to find out is how we behave. I was here in my college days.

But we never question why do we behave like that? Anyone can have similar behaviors but their way of thinking is so different that we can’t help asking ourselves “what are we thinking?” or “why am I like this?”.

The main question in our head: “Who are we?”

This was my biggest question when I was in college. I realized that school is one thing to help in knowledge, but when it comes to doing something I love for my entire life, that’s another thing.

So when I explored the field, I found a clue to find out who I am. At first, it was through researching right vs left brain before I found out that that’s a myth.

I searched some more, that was why I took numerous jobs before graduating college. Out of the five jobs I took, including internships, there was only one that made me feel energized. I couldn’t pinpoint it yet at that time.

Then after that, I spoke with a colleague who seems to be happy every time he works up to this day. And this is what he told me…

Fulfillment

This may be difficult as well to find. It took me five jobs until I realize it. I know someone who is good at both art and academics, and up to this day, he is still wondering what he wants to be. However, we must find that gives you fulfillment in certain fields.

My friend, who told me this, was in IT department for a year but later he moved to Sales. I asked what the hell was he thinking? In my culture, if you are academically smart, you are appreciated the most. I am not sure in other countries, but this is how I had to cope.

What he told me was that the Sales job gave him a satisfaction where he knew he was able to help people find what they need. There is a sense of purpose in life when he did that.

You may be writing in Medium because it earns money. But what made you write? How did you end up with all these ideas that made you want to write instead of taking other jobs? Did you like doing it?

Here is my little story on how I came to love writing.

I was never good at back in school. My teacher would give me a C or sometimes a D, my highest grade was a B+. At that moment, I despised writing.

And yet, here I am. Why?

Well, let me tell you that I was nervous when I first started this. I mean, I sucked at writing at school, why should I continue doing something I was bad at?

When college came around, I was inspired to write about life lessons every time there is a class presentation, and it wasn’t textbook-based. I did researches and read many studies to confirm my theories so that everyone will learn in a more fun manner.

There was a moment where we had to talk about leadership in class and I had to give examples. At this point, everyone knows the types of leaderships from textbooks, so I knew I had to do it another way. So instead of relying on the textbooks, I look for movie characters such as Iron Man and Wonder Woman and did endless researches to see if their leadership traits fit certain styles.

Then when it was time for me to present, that became my turning point.

I love it when everyone left the room with something to take away after classes, they had the face of ‘how come we never thought about it?’. Those moments were the best, and I love it every second.

I realized that in writing class, we were always told to write based on what they want, not what we want. There are many articles in Medium that told us to write what we want, and to just do it!

That’s how I end up here. To continue life lessons in a fun and honest way. I found my purpose, that’s why I stopped climbing the corporate ladder and focus on writing.

There is a scene from the 2018 movie Peter Rabbit where Thomas was asked by his crush what he missed when he was a toy store employee in London.

He replied:

I miss being helpful. A parent or grandparent comes into this shop looking for a gift for the child they love. I ask a few simple questions and know exactly what they need. I love helping people get what they want. Especially when they don’t even know that they want it. Those are the best.

Now that is a job fulfillment. He knows what he want to be known as and what he wants to do for the rest of his working life. It wasn’t for himself, it wasn’t for money either. But for others, thus, finding the purpose in life.

At the end of the movie, he still did sell toys again in another area and he lived happily with his wife.

As Simon Sinek said,

When we help ourselves, we find moment of happiness. When we help others, we find lasting fulfillment. — Simon Sinek

In other words, you will find your purpose in this world.

The Take….

Now it’s not easy to find the job that gives you satisfaction or fulfillment. We need to explore a lot of areas about ourselves, especially if you are a university student.

Don’t just climb the corporate ladder for status, do something that you give you fulfillment. I guarantee you that you won’t feel miserable once you find it.

Find your purpose. That way, you know what to do in your life and ultimately find what you love.

I hope you learn something from here.
