Achieving New Year Resolution.
In 2016, when I in my second year of college, I had lists of my New Years Resolution. I was so determined that as I enter college, I will achieve more. Here were my lists of New Year Resolutions back in 2015:
- Pass the semester with all As (Though I got one out of 5 subjects, most were Cs).
- Lose weight.
- Get a part-time job to get working experience.
- Get an exchange program.
- Learn investment.
- Improve debating.
- Draw more art.
Looks grand right? However, I only achieved one. It was embarrassing when I look back, but that happened when I was about to write my New Year resolutions again.
I was so frustrated. I thought that as I entered college, I would be able to tackle them all with no problem. Creating the lists you want to achieve is great, many people advised that. That’s why they always say that writing is good for you because you set a destination for your future, that’s when you know what to do. But not executing them? That’s a huge problem.
So I tried something different in 2017, I just made 1 New Year Resolution. Just 1: Get a part-time job. I thought that it is my top priority when I heard people telling me that my experience is more important, so that’s what I did.
I began looking for a job in January, seeking any positions that would accept me. There were countless restaurant jobs rejected me, even Starbucks didn’t accept me.
Then about February, I was hired to be a part-time teacher assistant. I was stunned!! After countless rejections, I got a job!! So, I got serious on this job, earning money and at the same time also studying.
About December, nearing the end of 2018, I decided to go on a diet. I don’t how effective it was since I never checked my weight. I was busy with work and studying as well, I hadn’t thought of it. But nearing the end of the year, people began noticing I was slimmer. That’s when I checked my weight and realized that I have lost a lot of weight.
So that’s two of my past New Year resolutions done!
The Take
I realized that when I do a New Year Resolution, I shouldn’t have made more than five things to do. It will lead to procrastination and, in the end, you won’t do it. It’s just like school, they gave you a lot of homework and the first thing you did when you get home is sleep first rather than quickly finishing it.
It’s the same for everything we do.
Don’t list too many things to do, you are endangering yourself to multitasking and that is bad for your productivity. I made an article that explains more about the danger of multitasking here:
So this 2019, I made only one New Year Resolution, and that is growing my side business/second income, which is:
- Writing more on Medium and
- Learning about investments
I didn’t dare to put another in fear that it will jeopardize my productivity so I keep it simple and focus on those two things.
I hope you will achieve your targets this year, and Happy New Year!!
