The Leadership Style Of Daenerys Targaryen
From the stats in my Medium, the most viewed one is about the leadership of Daenerys:
I’ll assume that: everyone admires her leadership. Therefore, I’ll explain chronologically her journey to become a leader. You can also apply this in your own life, just in a different way.
Note: Not all the affective behaviors are here, I will only explain the crucial parts, and it’ll be short to avoid a lot of spoilers. So here goes:
1. Determination To Change
She was first sold off as a slave for Khal Drogo, a leader of the Dothraki. At first, she accepted her fate. However, she wanted to prove herself worthy. Therefore, her first step to behaving like a Khaleesi is to catch Drogo’s attention. Once she did that, she also earned the respect of the Dothrakis because to Drogo, she is not a slave anymore but a lover. At this point, she earned the respect of the Dothrakis and can prove to everyone that she IS a Khalessi, not some mere slave.
For you, build yourself a reputation. See how you want to see yourself as, and then prove to everyone that you are that person.
2. Show Discipline
In the beginning, she was too soft to threaten. However, after proving to everyone that she can be a Khaleesi, she was able to show authority to her brother, who sold her to Drogo. This was the biggest change in the entire franchise in her character.
In your life, this can only work once you have behaved like one. When you have proven yourself to others that you can lead and you are not ashamed of doing so, people will then follow you.
An example in mine is when I was in college, I proved it by asking a lot of questions to the lecturers in class and acted first, which helped overcome my fear of public speaking. From here, when we were bunched together in random groups, there was an indirect vote that they made me the leader. Then when the task came, I divided the task and made a clear rule: we do this project together, or get out of the group. This is where you give discipline to others by showing authority in order to achieve your goal.
3. Define Your Goal That Benefits Others
Dany’s goal is to sit on the Iron Thrones so that there will be no more slaves in the world. When she was with her people, she didn’t see herself as Queen but someone equal. Dany showed empathy for others. This also differentiates her style with Cersei, who prided herself a lot. She successfully conquered Astapor and freed the slaves, however, they wanted to serve her willingly. To prove to the other slaves in other cities, she collected the slave collars and showed the slaves AND slave masters that freedom is possible and a rebellion will start. This was her main goal throughout the entire season, as a result, nearly the entire Esos wanted her to become Queen of both Esos and Westeros.
4. Nurture Your Followers
At first, Dothrakis never crossed the seas but Dany made it happened. Unsullied were once slaves but now armies. Her baby dragons are now full-grown dragons ready to serve none other than Dany. Tyrion Lannister, a house enemy of the Targaryen house, now willing to become the hand of Daenerys Targaryen.
Do you see how much change the people had because of her? She was able to inspire pretty much everyone to be the better versions of themselves.
You can do this by evaluating your member’s tasks, give them feedback, and encourage them to do their best.
In conclusion….
- Change yourself to be a better person
- Show Disciplines
- Define your goal that benefits others
- Nurture your followers
I hope that helps you all :)
